The 15 Biggest Social Networks

Facebook is by far the biggest virtual community out there. Its 1.44 billion active users are almost double those of China's Tencent QQ, ranked second. Google+ is the second biggest for registered users (2 billion, like Facebook). Yet only 540 million of them classify as active users.

Other 15 social sites have reached a community of 100M+ users. This Silk visualizes them all.

Facebook indisputably has the biggest user base, with 2 billion registered users, of which 1.4 active. And this excludes its subsidiaries WhatApp and Instagram, respectively with 800M and 300M active users.

Google+ has roughly the same amount of registered users as Facebook. Yet only 540 million are considered active. Less than those of Tencent QQ (China), WhatsApp and WeChat.

Possibly, such a gap between registered and active users, is explained by the fact that for long Google Plus was tied to the use of Gmail.

For this, Google+ appears to have one of the lowest rate of active users out of the total registered users. Only a 27% ratio.

Of course, it's hard to compute exact ratios between active and registered users. At first glance, it appears that Tencent QQ has the highest proportion. About 83% of its 1 billion registered users are active users.

Google+ has been around since June 2011. It, therefore, reached the 2 billion users threshold far quicker than Facebook (launched in February 2004). In fact, it has had an average of 2.3 million registered users per day, since its launch. WeChat and WhatsApp come second, with 736K and 571K.

Google+'s dominance shrinks down a bit when we focus on active users. Still, it reached its 540 million active users in just 853 days, between June 2011 and October 2013.

In 2015 WhatsApp reached 800,000,00 active users after only 4 years of service. More than 2.5x those that Skype had after 11 years since launching.

This data seems to suggest that social networking sites with most user registered per-day, are also the ones with less active users per day. In other words: the slower the community grows, the more active its users.
